"No One Is Coming to Save Me": Sacha Hughes on Grief, Self-Sabotage & Finding Her Voice
In a heartfelt conversation with Dr Connie Kerali on this week's episode of Speak Shame, author Sacha Hughes intimately shares her transformative journey from an uphill battle with grief and self-sabotage to finding her voice and purpose through writing.
The Beginning of the Journey
Sacha's story begins with a description of her idyllic childhood, filled with love and care from her parents. Despite this nurturing environment, Sacha recalls struggling with feelings of inadequacy and anxiousness, which shadowed her early years. Her life took a dramatic turn at the age of 24 when she lost her mother to cancer. This devastating loss led Sacha into a spiral of grief as she battled with the overwhelming pain.
Navigating the Darkness
Faced with the despair of her mother's passing, Sacha turned to coping mechanisms such as alcohol and drugs to numb her emotions. She also pursued relationships with the hope of being rescued from her grief, leading to further personal challenges, including a divorce. It was during this tumultuous period that Sacha realised she was relying on self-sabotage and needed a change. Determined to break free from these destructive cycles, she embarked on a personal journey to transform her breakdown into a breakthrough.
The Path to Self-Discovery and Writing
Sacha dedicated herself to self-improvement, exploring spiritual teachings and practices that shifted her internal world. Books by inspiring authors like Louise Hay and Eckhart Tolle helped her heal and gain perspective on her experiences. These revelations empowered Sacha to turn pain into purpose and inspired her writing journey.
Three years ago, Sacha experienced a transformative moment during a holiday, spurring her to begin writing her novel series, Soho Summer. Fuelled by passion and purpose, her debut book, "Love, Grief, and More Sex Than Pinot," was born - a testament to her personal growth and resilience.
Empowerment and Inspiration
Now 46, Sacha has grown from the shy child she once was into a confident woman who has reclaimed her voice. Through this newfound empowerment, she hopes to inspire others by sharing the lessons of her journey. She believes that embracing the messiness of life is crucial for personal growth and encourages others to take charge of their narratives.
Words of Wisdom
Sacha emphasises the importance of self-reliance, urging listeners to realise their power to create an incredible life. She advocates for turning inward, cultivating silence, and listening to one's intuition to overcome adversities. Her journey underlines that while the path may be challenging and lonely at times, the outcome is worth every struggle.
Creating Lasting Connections
While still in the early stages of gaining visibility, Sacha is beginning to connect with people drawn to her story. Her journey illustrates how sharing experiences can foster community and support, highlighting the power of connection and storytelling.
Sacha Hughes' narrative is a moving reminder of the strength found in vulnerability, the transformative potential of self-reflection, and the empowerment that comes from reclaiming one’s voice. Her journey from personal suffering to a place of purpose and peace serves as an inspiration for anyone facing their own battles.
