Negative Self-Beliefs
A few years ago, whilst participating in a group coaching session, a participant recounted a story about how a negative self-belief stopped her from pursuing a goal. Her coach countered this statement with, “And what if the opposite was true?” This one simple question has stuck with me ever since, and I want to put that question to you: what things in your life do you tell yourself that you can’t do, and what if the opposite were true? How would your life be different?
Our deeply held thoughts, habits and beliefs often stem from our childhood and were formed to help keep us safe. Whilst they may have served a purpose then, these limiting beliefs are likely to be holding us back from realising our true potential now.
Maybe you’ve gone through your life as a people-pleaser. Maybe you tend towards perfectionism. Or maybe fear of failure is holding you back. Underlying all of these is likely the deeply rooted belief that, “I’m not enough.” So the first step in the process of making transformational changes in your life is understanding what your limiting self-beliefs are. Now take a moment to imagine what your life could be like if the opposite were true. What would you be doing 1, 5 or 10 years from now?
It's important to remind ourselves that the thoughts and beliefs we have about ourselves are exactly that. They are not facts. They are not written in stone, and it is possible to change. I know this to be true on a personal level because it’s the reason this company exists. It’s the reason I’m following my dreams. So, tell me, what is your biggest limiting belief and how would your life be different if you believed the opposite were true?
